Soccer boss’ double tragedy

IRVIN Khoza, chairman of the Premier Soccer League and one of Africa’s leading football bosses, has suffered a double tragedy, losing his second wife in less than a year.

Khoza’s first wife Matina Elsie, 69, died after a long illness. Her death comes several months after his second wife, Yvonne Mantwa, succumbed to cancer.

In a statement, Khoza’s club, Orlando Pirates said: “Mme Matina, who was affectionately referred to by everybody, including her ten grandchildren, as Mama, has been in and out of hospital in the last few years, battling ill health.

“The Khoza family pleads with the public to help us observe restrictions imposed on the nation by the COVID-19 pandemic. There will, as a result, be no visitations and prayer services at home.”

Khoza’s club Pirates is the first South African club to win the continental club championship trophy staged by the Confederation of African football.
