Rich Mnisi expresses South African identity with Adidas collaboration

AFRICAN MIRROR REPORTER

TAKING on the global stage, South African award-winning fashion designer Rich Mnisi has released a capsule collection with athleisure giant Adidas.

The two brands have linked up on a collection of streetwear and athletic pieces that fuse their identities — Adidas’ sharp and technical prowess, and Mnisi’s bold Tsonga-inspired prints.

“My identity comes through in how they all come together in every piece. There are no limits to how we applied the colours. It’s bold and doesn’t follow any rules,” Mnisi tells PAPER magazine.

Staying close to his heritage and community, Mnisi gives fans and fashion lovers a glimpse of his life through the collection with a palette of bright prints, vibrant clashing colours, and abstract details.

“I am immensely proud to present this collection in collaboration with Adidas, an iconic brand that I grew up seeing on People of Colour that were rewriting the arts. It has been a pleasure to bring my designs to classic pieces,” he said.

“We have created a bright, unique collection that reflects my love for the idea of community and heritage, individuality, and self-expression.”

Straying slightly from the Rich Mnisi brand’s staple of high fashion pieces, the capsule collaboration features tights; footwear; matching sweat tops and sweatpants; headscarves and swimsuits – unknown territory for the South African designer.

“Our aim was to create pieces that support life on and off the sports field,” Mnisi said.

Since the inception of the Rich Mnisi brand, the designer and label has always put South Africa’s culture at the forefront of both its fashion and furniture designs.

“My ethos as a designer is so heavily influenced by my upbringing and the Tsonga community,” he said. “They celebrate themselves through the textures and colours of their clothes and are very proud of who they are.”

The collection releases in February 2022 and will be available on adidas.com.
